Graphical MySQL Clients

"Help, I'm afraid of the command line! Using mysql with a command line client is my idea of hell on earth! I cannot, will not, subject myself to such horror! Woe! Woe! Oh woe is me and all my kind! Couldn't I just use phpmyadmin?"

No, you must use the command line! Ah ha ha ha ha ha!!!

Just kidding. If you have your own server colocated with us and you insist we can help you install phpmyadmin. We won't install it on a shared server, however, because of its long history of security problems. Also, there are better alternatives, nicer programs with nicer interfaces that you can use on your own computer. Here are just three I had a superficial look at. Being a man, I use the command line client myself, so I haven't tested these extensively under real world conditions.

Some may remember the venerable Mysql-Front graphical client for Windows. There is some sad history there which might lead one to believe that it is now defunct, dead, joined the choir invisible. Perhaps that was true for a minute, but like a phoenix it rose from the ashes as HeidiSQL. It has tables and tabs and fields and trees and menus and all kinds of graphical goodness you can mess with in the perpetual pursuit of trying to get things done without really knowing what you're doing.

SQLyog Community Edition is very similar to HeidiSQL, so much so I wonder if their code bases aren't related in some way. At first glance it appears as though it may be a bit more polished.

Navicat is not free, but judging from the appearance of the trial version, this is the most polished of the three. It looks like some professional grade spit and polish was applied to the interface. It's significantly prettier than both HeidiSQL and SQLyog. Navicat also offers the standard version for both Mac and Linux users.

Navicat

$139 (Enterprise)
$99 (Standard)
$75 (Educational License)

All three of these are more serious contenders for your consideration than the web based phpmyadmin.
